Would you rather be an onlooker even if you had the means to help? Think about the number of casualties that could have been prevented through timely action by an onlooker.

This is a notable story that played out two weeks ago on Nelson Mandela University- South Campus residence (PGSV) when Dumisani Myataza spotted a fellow colleague lying on the ground suffering from an allergic reaction to a bee sting. Mr Myataza reported that he had seen the fellow colleague lying outside the residence and contacted the Occupational Health and Wellness Centre.

In his own vehicle he transported the employee to the Occupational Health and Wellness Centre where he was treated and stabilized. He was the later transferred to Mercantile Hospital for monitoring and further management.

We love the story as it touches on the Nelson Mandela University values of Ubuntu, Integrity and Excellence and we appreciate the fact that there are people who would jump into action without giving it a second thought when it comes to saving someone’s life.

“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in ret return”. Nelson Mandela
